BS4142 Noise Surveys – Ensuring Compliance and Protecting Communities

If you’ve been asked to carry out a noise survey as part of a planning condition, we at APT Sound Testing can guide you through the process. With industrial noise becoming an increasingly significant consideration for planning authorities, especially as brownfield redevelopment brings industrial and residential areas closer together, managing noise levels is essential for protecting local amenity and quality of life.

Why BS4142 Noise Surveys Matter

Local authorities often control noise emissions through planning conditions, which may require limits on the sound produced by plant and machinery. Achieving these limits can involve measures such as sound insulation or operational restrictions. Accurately measuring and assessing noise levels is therefore a critical step in ensuring compliance and reducing the risk of complaints.

BS4142 noise surveys are designed to evaluate the impact of industrial or commercial noise on nearby residential areas. They are commonly required for planning applications, such as for HVAC systems, machinery, or new industrial operations, and can also help resolve noise complaints.

How a BS4142 Assessment Works

A BS4142 assessment compares the level of industrial noise with the background sound in the surrounding area to determine the likelihood of an adverse impact. Key components include:

  • Purpose: Evaluates noise from industrial or manufacturing sites, including fixed installations and mobile plant such as generators, chillers, and loading bays.
  • Baseline Survey: Measures representative background noise levels at sensitive locations.
  • Specific Sound Level: Quantifies the noise emitted from the source.
  • Rating Level: Adjusts the specific sound level to account for characteristics like tonality, impulsivity, or intermittency.

For new noise sources, we measure existing background levels over a 24-hour period and predict the potential impact. For existing sources, we compare measurements taken with and without the noise source to determine the difference.

Our Approach

BS4142 uses the LA90 metric, which records the sound level exceeded for 90% of the measurement period, often at different times of the day, to accurately capture background noise. Our consultants are highly experienced in BS4142 methodology and can provide:

  • Detailed survey reports
  • Noise mapping to demonstrate the effectiveness of mitigation measures
  • Recommendations for reducing noise from extraction systems, air conditioners, industrial plant, refrigeration units, and general industrial operations

We use the latest Norsonic acoustic equipment to ensure surveys are fully compliant and accurate.
